Today, himaya is a national reference for protection in Lebanon, working across the country to prevent violence, respond to abuse, and strengthen protection systems, with children at the center.
himaya plays an active role at the national level, holding official mandates from the Ministry of Justice in multiple governorates to handle judicial protection cases. It is also an elected member of the Child Protection Sector Core Group, contributing to national strategies, coordination, and policy development.
Through its role in hosting the LHDF (Lebanon Humanitarian & Development Forum), himaya supports the advancement of the localization agenda and contributes to strengthening the capacity and positioning of national NGOs in Lebanon.
By strengthening protective environments across these levels, himaya ensures that protection is coordinated, sustainable, and rooted in collective responsibility.
Within this approach, himaya integrates child protection, gender-based violence, and mental health and psychosocial support into a unified protection framework, ensuring holistic, trauma-informed, and needs-based responses.
This work is guided by a clear vision and mission:
Our vision
Children feel safe in a world that celebrates their rights.
Our mission
Promote a safe environment for children and ensure their protection through holistic intervention and community empowerment
The Beginning
Since 2008
Founded in 2008 in response to the urgent need for child protection in Lebanon, himaya launched its first prevention and resilience services and began operating a 24/7 helpline for children subjected to abuse.
Building a National Network
2010 – 2015
Between 2010 and 2015, himaya expanded its services across Lebanon, opened regional offices, launched national awareness campaigns, strengthened psychosocial support services, and built prevention and training programs for children and families affected by violence.
National Mandate & System Building
2016 – 2019
From 2016 onward, himaya strengthened its institutional role by establishing specialized departments, gaining official mandates to handle legal protection cases in multiple governorates, and becoming an active stakeholder in the national child protection sector. At the same time, it shifted toward a more localized and sustainable model by strengthening community-based protection networks and initiatives such as Child Municipal Councils, reinforcing community ownership and placing safe identification and referral mechanisms at the forefront of protection responses.
Responding in Times of Crisis
2019 – 2022
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Beirut Port explosion, and periods of national crisis, himaya led protection responses, provided psychosocial support, and supported the most vulnerable children and families.
Recognized & Trusted
2022 – Today
Since 2022, himaya has emerged as a trusted national leader in protection, working across Lebanon to safeguard childhoods and strengthen the protection network. It has also taken on a leading role in consortia and multisectoral projects, strengthening the capacities of local partners and reinforcing collaborative protection responses.
